Hi, my name is Kristen (she/her)

Certified Wayfinder Coach ⋄ Psychosomatic/Parts Therapy Practitioner ⋄ Trauma-Informed ⋄ Podcaster ⋄ Singer ⋄ Feminist
About Me
I design for the whole person: the parts that seek clarity and the parts that seek healing.
For over a decade, I’ve worked at the intersection of human-computer interaction and systemic design. I’ve architected design language systems for global retailers and optimized digital experiences for millions of users. But my work has always been driven by a deeper inquiry: How do we create digital containers that respect the human nervous system?
My approach to UX is grounded in Senior-level technical rigor and elevated by my practice as a Psychosomatic and Parts Therapy Practitioner.
I don’t just build interfaces; I advocate for the user’s emotional and somatic safety. Whether I am generating $1M in revenue through strategic ad placements at Nordstrom or facilitating a coaching session through, my goal is the same: to move from abstraction to precise, compassionate observation.
The lenses I bring to my work:
Systemic Architecture: Over a decade of experience architecting and navigating complex digital systems.
Trauma-Informed Design: Integrating Internal Family Systems (IFS) and somatic principles to create inclusive, accessible digital spaces.
Vocal Expression: As a singer and podcaster, I understand the power of resonance and the importance of finding a precise language for what was previously unspeakable.
I am a Wayfinder, someone who has walked through the shadows of corporate systems and returned with the tools to build something more human. I’m currently based in Chicago, where I spend my time creating, singing, and exploring the magic of the everyday.
What I Do Now
I am currently exploring the architecture of the human experience through three primary channels: somatic practice, narrative, and systemic design.
Since transitioning from my role as a Senior UX Designer at Nordstrom in early 2025, I have moved from designing retail systems to designing for the whole person. My days are split between deep-dive practitioner work and creative expression:
Somatic & Parts Therapy Facilitation: Through my practice, Meaning Making Magic, I hold space for clients navigating their own internal systems. My training as a Psychosomatic and Parts Therapy Practitioner allows me to bring an advanced, trauma-informed lens to everything I build, ensuring that digital experiences respect the human nervous system.
The Narrative Shadow: I am currently developing a trauma-informed Harry Potter podcast that explores the intersections of storytelling, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and healing. This project is my current “R&D lab” for how we use narrative to map the previously unspeakable parts of our experience.
Wayfinding & Community: As a Certified Wayfinder Coach, I support groups and individuals in navigating transitions with agency and compassion by facilitating microdosing cycles grounded in safety and somatic awareness.
I am looking for my next “Great Work” at the intersection of these fields, a place where my technical rigor and my practitioner’s soul can exist in the same room.
What I Did Before
Nordstrom
Nordstrom is a leading fashion retailer. I was first part of the Branding & Events team and eventually part of the design language system team. I was responsible for researching component best practices, designing solutions with input from fellow UX Designers for the XD team to use in their Figma designs, and collaborating both with Content Designers to properly document the usage of the component and with engineers to build the component used by external teams in production. The DLS team followed an Agile model and had dedicated engineers.
Grainger
Grainger is a B2B industrial supply company. I helped redesign an adaptive/responsive version of the Grainger.com Registration and Order History experiences. I was responsible for the design strategy of both long- and short-term goals and providing wireframes/mockups with interaction notes to the cross-functional development team, while partnering closely with the Visual Designer who was responsible for pixel-perfect comps. The projects ran in an Agile framework, and I was partially embedded on the development teams.
Thomson Reuters
I previously worked at Thomson Reuters, a global organization that is mostly in the software development space. I was a UX Designer in the Tax & Accounting business for 2 years. I was responsible for helping migrate the individual legacy desktop applications to a comprehensive cloud suite, called Onvio, focusing on the Firm Management and Documents applications. It was my job to conduct new (or incorporate existing) user research to determine the problems with the legacy software and/or existing Onvio designs. I then designed solutions to those problems and conducted testing with users to ensure their feedback was always incorporated.
ForeSee
Before that, I worked at ForeSee, a customer experience analytics company that measures customer satisfaction of websites/apps via surveys. I was initially an intern, but was hired to the Usability team after I completed my master’s degree. As a Usability Analyst, it was my job to conduct heuristic evaluations of websites/apps and present usability best practice recommendations to clients like AT&T, Canadian Tire, Delta, Disney, Dressbarn, Express, Federal Railroad Administration, Indiana University Health, The North Face, Ralph Lauren, and Sprint. These deliverables were called Usability Audit Reviews (or UARs).
What I'm Passionate About
I am driven by the belief that language and design can name the unspeakable and build bridges toward healing.
My passions are not separate from my work; they are the fuel for it. I am constantly seeking the “Magic” in the mundane and the “Meaning” in the complex:
The Alchemy of Storytelling: I have a lifelong fascination with the worlds we build to understand ourselves, most notably the Harry Potter universe. My passion lies in looking at these stories through a trauma-informed lens, exploring how narrative can be a vehicle for Internal Family Systems (IFS) work and ancestral healing.
The Protection of Human Rights: My work is grounded in an unwavering commitment to women’s rights and human rights. I believe design is a political act, and I am passionate about creating digital spaces that are inclusive, accessible, and restorative for all people.
The Wisdom of the Natural & Mystical: Whether I am connecting with ancestors or engaging with the synchronicity of an oracle card practice, I am passionate about honoring the intuitive and the elemental.
The Power of the Voice: From singing to podcasting, I am obsessed with the human voice as a tool for connection and agency. I believe that when we find the precise language for our experience, we create an echo that can help others find their way back to themselves.
I am a Wayfinder, committed to walking through the shadows and returning with the light of clarity and compassion.
What Makes me Unique
I am a bridge-builder between the architecture of systems and the architecture of the human soul.
My perspective is shaped by a decade of navigating complex digital landscapes and a lifetime of exploring the nuance of human expression. Here is the singular lens I bring to every project:
The Musician’s Ear for Resonance: My foundation as a classically trained singer means I approach design with an acute sensitivity to rhythm, harmony, and voice. I don’t just look for friction in a user flow; I listen for where the experience loses its resonance. This allows me to build digital products that feel like a conversation, not just a transaction.
Systemic Rigor Meets Somatic Safety: I have the technical chops to maintain a global design system at a company like Nordstrom, but I also have the practitioner’s training to know how those systems impact a user’s nervous system. I advocate for somatic accessibility, designing spaces where users feel regulated, safe, and seen.
The Librarian’s Heart for Clarity: Having worked as a librarian, I possess a deep-seated respect for the organization of knowledge. I find the unspeakable patterns in complex data and translate them into language and interfaces that provide immediate, grounded clarity.
A Wayfinding Approach to Discovery: As a Certified Wayfinder Coach and Parts Therapy Practitioner, my discovery process is built on deep, compassionate inquiry. I don’t just ask what a user wants; I seek to understand the various “parts” of their experience, allowing for a more profound level of user empathy and product innovation.
I bring a language precise enough to name the invisible, whether that’s a bug in a design system or a block in a user’s journey.
